Jackal-headed god, Anubis ( the god of death, embalming, mummification, mortuaries, cemeteries, tombs, the underworld and the afterlife, ) is also recognized as the ‘Guardian of the Scales’ and presided over the the final, most crucial test of the dead’s journey into the afterlife.
Ancient Egyptians believed man’s heart revealed all their good and bad deeds.
In The Weighing of the Heart of the Soul ceremony, the heart is placed on a scale and weighed against the Feather of Ma’at - (the winged goddess of truth, harmony, justice and balance).
If one's heart is lighter than the Feather of Truth, he will survive the underworld and continue into the afterlife . If his heart proves heavier, he will be eaten by and continue into the digestive system of Ammit - a crocodile-headed, lion-bodied, hippopotamus-hindquartered goddess of the underworld and ‘Devourer of the Dead’ / ‘Eater of Souls’.
